WELCOME TO GRADE 7!
I am very excited to start a new school year - and hopefully you are, too! Grade 7 is full of exciting changes including new teachers, new classes, new privileges...and new responsibilities!
One of the major responsibilities of being in Grade 7 is keeping track of homework and getting it completed on time. I will use several systems to help with this: 1) keeping homework updated on the board in the classroom, 2) texting homework using "REMIND" - look in your information package sent home on the first day, and 3) updating the website (admittedly, I'm not very good at this one...you're best to rely on the other two!) Let's work hard to master this responsibility!
Activities Going On in the Classroom...
ENGLISH
Every morning, students will begin the day with a 10-minute Bell Ringer activity. The activities are:
Monday Madness
This is a chance to settle back into the school week and enjoy 10 minutes of silent reading.
Edit or Not - Here We Come!
On Tuesday mornings students will edit a short piece of historical information for that particular date. Students must edit for spelling, capitalization and punctuation. They must correct run-on sentences and sentence fragments. The goal is to learn new grammatical skills and begin transferring them to our daily writing.
Write-On Wednesday
Students will respond to writing prompts...questions to think about, stories to complete, etc. The goal is to become more confident writers!
Thoughtful Thursday
Every Thursday morning, students will view an inspiring or thought-provoking video (usually 3-4 minutes in length). Students must put their critical thinking skills to the test and reflect on what the characters' motivations and feelings might be for the particular actions shown in the clip.
Freebie Friday
Finish off the week with some more silent reading.
Reading and Writing
Comprehension and writing activities will be occurring almost daily! We will begin with a classic novel, "Tuck Everlasting."
T.U.S.C. (Totally Unique Speaking Club)
Once per month, students will be assigned a topic to present orally to the class. Students are expected to work on this topic AT HOME and to come prepared for the presentation date set. Students need to work on: introducing their topic to the audience, eye contact, fluency, projecting their voice, and becoming confident speaking publicly. Topics will vary from month to month giving students the opportunity to present science experiments, cooking demonstrations, story-telling, family history, and much more!
SCIENCE
Both classes will begin learning about "Structures and Forces". This unit will be based around learning and building activities - put your knowledge to the test!
MATH
We will be using a program called "Jump Math" which is designed to spiral its way through the curriculum and continually relate topics to each other. Students will also practice daily Mental Math facts and learn different problem solving techniques. Continued practice of math facts is always a good thing! I look forward to building our Math brains and becoming Mathmagicians!
Every Day 6 students will have a chance to practice Math skills in the computer lab using IXL.com. Assignments will be given that correlate with what we're doing in the classroom. Watch for on-going due dates.
